While traveling to Yaroslavl, many try to visit the famous Volzhskaya embankment. This well-kept corner of the ancient city has long been a popular tourist attraction. It is pleasant to walk along the Volga coast. The embankment offers picturesque views of the river expanses and architectural sights of Yaroslavl. And the Strelka between the Volga and Korotosl looks very nice.

History of creation

For a long time, the urban development of Yaroslavl overlooked the Volga coast. At this place, river vessels were unloaded, bringing goods to the city, fishermen sold their catch, and Yaroslavl merchants entered into commercial deals. However, no high-quality buildings were built on the coast, since it was completely covered with ravines and potholes. Houses and temples made of stone began to appear here only in the 17th century.

For the first time, an attempt was made to ennoble the Volga embankment in 1757. According to the diocese, an order passed - all the monastic monasteries to collect the stone and strengthen the Volga bank along the city. But these works turned out to be so large-scale that it was possible to equip the coastline only near the Strelka, in front of the bishop's house.

According to the general urban planning plan of the late 1770s, Yaroslavl began to be rebuilt. Residential buildings were moved further from the river bank, and the embankment was significantly expanded.

In 1823, the city received a visit from Emperor Alexander I. The sovereign did not like the unkempt look of the city embankment. Therefore, he granted the petition of Alexander Mikhailovich Bezobrazov, who was then the governor of Yaroslavl, to allocate money for the development of the coastal territory. Two hundred thousand rubles - a huge sum for those times! Major General Bogdan Andreevich Hermes was sent to the city to supervise the engineering work.

Most of the work was completed in 1825. The right-bank slopes of the river were reinforced with earth and rubble. The land was transported from the opposite bank of the Volga and from the Lower Island on barges and smaller river vessels. Interestingly, the stone was delivered to the embankment free of charge. Such a “tribute” of a quarter of a fathom was imposed on all ships sailing past the city. More than 150 inmates of the infamous Korovniki prison worked on earthworks. Layers of moss were laid on top of the sod. And according to the documents, it is known that a huge amount of it was used - 35 thousand cubic meters. The greatest difficulties were caused by the laying of large boulders at the very base of the slopes, washed away by river water.

At the top of the embankment, a promenade was arranged, along which an openwork cast-iron lattice was placed, replacing a dilapidated wooden fence. Pedestrian bridges were set up across the gullies, and a beautiful linden alley was planted. To complete all the work, which lasted until the summer of 1835, the tsar allocated an additional 70 thousand rubles.

Later, in 1944, the embankment was covered with asphalt. And the last works on its improvement took place on the 1000th anniversary of ancient Yaroslavl - in 2010.

Walk along the Volzhskaya embankment

The main Yaroslavl promenade is very clean and well maintained. It consists of three tiers. And the most impressive panorama of the Volga, a birch grove on its opposite bank and the city opens from the upper one. There are walking paths and a separate path for cyclists. In the warm season, you can even rent a bike on Strelka.

Light and musical fountains have become a modern stylish decoration of the embankment. Spectacular "performances" can be seen on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, as well as on holidays from 9 pm to midnight. On weekends, many residents of Yaroslavl and tourists gather on the embankment. Someone prefers leisurely walks, while others prefer to relax in small cozy cafes.

At the very beginning of the embankment, as viewed from the Strelka side, there is a two-story building of the Metropolitan Chambers, erected at the end of the 17th century. There lived the head of the Rostov diocese, Metropolitan Iona Sysoevich, who organized the construction of stone churches in Yaroslavl - real pearls of ancient Russian architecture. Nearby there is a rectangle of the Volga (or Arsenalnaya) tower, preserved from the old Zemlyanoy town.

Further along the embankment there is a whole line of historical civil and religious buildings, each of which keeps a significant part of the history not only of Yaroslavl, but of the whole of Russia. The House of Bolkonsky (house 7) is noteworthy, in which a military hospital was located during the Patriotic War of 1812. Lieutenant General Nikolai Tuchkov, seriously wounded in battle, was brought here. It is believed that he became the prototype of the famous hero of the novel by L.N. Tolstoy "War and Peace" - Andrei Bolkonsky.

The real visiting card of the picturesque embankment is the beautiful rounded gazebo built in the 1840s near the Myakushkinsky descent. For the residents of the city, this six-column rotunda has long become a special place where newlyweds make appointments and take pictures.

There are also several interesting Yaroslavl museums on the Volzhskaya embankment - the city history museum in the former estate of the merchant V.Ya. Kuznetsov, an art museum in the former governor's house and a wonderful private collection "Music and Time".
